Specialized courses conducted by the Medical Council of Ukraine are focused on the outworking and mastering of medicine and its separate sections in a foreign language. They allow students to improve the overall level of language knowledge and skills, to obtain fundamental knowledge of medical terminology, to be acquainted with the peculiarities of foreign medicine and master care standards applied in other countries. During classes, students are actively engaged into practical exercises, which simulate the communication with the patient and give a person the opportunity to understand the peculiarities of mentality and behavior of foreigners.
Training materials include a variety of manuals with reach medical lexis, which is necessary for conducting reception and patient counseling, communication on professional issues with other health professionals, studying of highly specialized foreign medical literature. Specialized medical courses will help to improve conversational skills and pronunciation, to cope with the language barrier and to bring to the automaticity great set of collocations and phrases (including professional vocabulary and medical jargon). The course program also includes reading and filling out medical records, practice of hospital rounds and making presentations for conferences and international symposiums.
In addition, specialized medical courses are focused on broadening of vocabulary, development of grammar skills and capacity for listening. In addition, courses allow learning the basic techniques of everyday communication and helps to establish contacts with the patient-native speakers. Many of our teachers some time have been living abroad, so they can teach how to interpret nonverbal cues and assess the emotional state of the foreigner. During study, students review culture and traditions of the countries whose language they are studying.
